"Every live thing is a survivor on a kind of extended emergency bivouac" wrote Annie Dillard in her amazing book Pilgrim at Tinker Creek; I was reminded of those resonant lines the other day when I found this place in the middle of a field, where a deer or suchlike had spent the night.


I thought of the unrelenting struggle that so many creatures move through every moment of their lives, especially as winter lowers the skies down upon the countryside:


...and the leaves and flowers return to the ground they came from.
